Bangalore City is just recovering from a major garbage pile-up in the city due to the virtual collapse of the BBMP’s garbage disposal system. The protests of village communities close to the dumping grounds of the enormous quantity of garbage a metropolis generates triggered the crisis.
Managing waste has become a major and contentious issue world over and the 10 th Aug 2012 issue of Science has a special section dealing with waste, with many new ideas thrown in about how others are managing the problem. Municipal solid waste management in India has already become a major problem and just dumping the unsorted urban waste into landfills is no solution and will have serious environmental consequences.
